How to Make a Story Inspiration Collage

Step 1: Gather Materials
  • Clip pictures from old magazines of whatever reminds you of your story, the characters, the mood etc, or what interests you.
  • Find pictures on the internet.
  • (If you want) go out and take pictures of your own and print them.
  • Clip out words from magazines or print any words that are related to your story, catch your eye or inspire you.
  • Gather sequins, stickers or other artsy stuff you might want to use.
 Step 2: Make the Collage

Arrange pictures and words on a piece of paper or in a journal. When you are happy with how it looks, paste them down (I use glue sticks). Add stickers or other accents. Have fun! When you are done with your collage post it by your desk or somewhere you can see it often.

What to do with the leftover pictures and words? Use them!

Index Card Writing Project
In this project you will be creating a collection of cards with a picture on them and a collection of cards with a word on them.
  • Get a pack of index cards.
  • Divide the cards up, some will be used for pictures and some will used for words.
  • Paste one picture to a blank card.
  • Or paste/write one word on a blank card.
Randomly (or purposefully) select 1-2 cards and use them as inspiration for free writing. I like to pick one card with a picture and one card with a word. What does the picture/words make you think of? Write whatever comes to your mind, allow it to take you wherever it wants to go.

Most of all, have fun!

  2. Hey, nifty post! Made me remember a collage I did quite some time ago for one of my projects. Being very visually oriented, I did find the collage helped me along with my writing.

  3. Awesome post! I did this for my two main characters in Ethra, with pictures of the people the characters looked like, clothes they would wear, and key items they would have. It really helps to visualise your characters, especially if your struggling with how to describe them.
Might give it a go when I'm planning for camp :)

  5. Oh, I like!
I like to draw my characters. I'm not a fantastic drawer, so nobody will EVER see them except me, but I find it helps me clarify in my head exactly what they look like. And when I'm shopping, I'll sometimes think, "Oh, such-and-such a character would LOVE that."
It's all about making them more real, I think!

    1. Drawing characters is a great idea, sometimes I find photos of people that resemble my characters but they are usually slightly off. That is great that you see things that your characters would love, they really do become a part of your life.
