The Writing Blues

There's a time when your bones ache and your fingers just won't move
The pen sits there on the paper and you just don't know what to do
The keyboard is collecting dust for days on end
That's how you know you've got it bad my friend
You've got the writing blues, the writing blues, when you've lost the muse, you've got the writing blues...

The writing spirit has been so fickle lately, every now and then I get inspired and scribble some things down and then its gone again. Ahh well. There is nothing wrong with having a break (as long as I don't give up!). It's time to fill the creative well, and there is nothing wrong with that. "Sometimes the arrow has to draw back to fly ahead." I'll be reading over Falcon Prince this month and try to get into editing mode, and I'll be posting some fun writing exercises to try. Yeah!

I know the muse will come again someday, and my writing blues will go away.

  1. This happens to us all. At least you have a positive attitude about it. As long as you don't get too discouraged, inspiration will indeed come again. Good luck.

  2. I get the writing blues sometimes too. It will come back to you... usually when you least expect it!

  4. Andrea, you know I've been on a long break from writing, definitely held back by the blues. This weekend things perked up and I got some good stuff done, but I'm not assuming anything, nor will I put unrealistic expectations upon myself. We plow through eventually. Never give up! Never surrender! :-)

  5. Soooooo hard... HARD... but like L.G. said, you've got the perspective. Just embrace that this is a down moment, and know that because of this slight down moment/break, there's a huge up moment coming soon ;)

  6. It'll come back. Doing editing inspires me sometimes. Sounds funny, but I'd rather be writing than editing, and sometimes my new ideas pop up then. Maybe it will for you too.

  7. Yes, the blues will go away. I had them all summer then the muse hit. I haven't wanted to stop writing since. Hang in there. :)

  8. What block? You're just letting your ideas percolate.

  10. Editing mode is a great mode to be in, too. Inspiration usually comes while you're working on something else, and then you won't be able to wait to get started! :)

  11. You just need the right prompt! I found a photograph that seriously hit me like lightening and I cant stop this story from rapidly expanding, the only trouble is will I be able to write it all out.
    Happy Editing :)

  12. I'm deep in the thralls of writing blues at the moment as well so I know how you feel. Hope the muse returns again soon!

  13. Cleaning helps unclog my flow of creativity. I know, too bad shopping or drinking wine doesn't have the same effect.

  14. When my writing blues come, I tend to read, edit, bake. Slowly the muse gets tempted back. I scribble long meaningless passages on notebooks, and pretend I'm not blocked.

But you know, I believe only those who write from their soul get blocked--- the blues have a reason, and it lies deep in our writing selves.

Love yourself at this time, and your Muse would feel the love and come back.

Sending you lots of good vibes :)

    1. Do you bake because your muse likes cookies?

  15. Hang in there! It'll definitely return, probably when you least expect it. My writing blues usually leave right as I'm falling asleep and get walloped with a sudden new idea. :)

  16. It happens to everyone, so at least you're not alone. Relax about it, the more you fret the worse it can become. Find something else to stimulate and occupy your mind and things will get back to normal. :)

  17. Keep writing. The ideas will come. When I get stuck I sometimes give it a rest and go for a walk or clean something or write something different and skip that part until I figure out what to do with it. I'm a new follower from my friend Lauren's Eclectic blog.

  18. My favorite is to sit and watch people and write their stories in your mind.

  20. I know what you mean. I haven't really been able to write anything substantial in months. So instead I'm finishing edits and doing other creative activities like painting and drawing.

:-) Hope you're doing better than me though!
